He is strong, a martial arts master and fearless. He is a creature of intellect. The Holmes in this film is 93 years old, in declining health, has difficulty walking, and is a man whose memory deserts him from time to time.

He is also - gasp - prone to moments of sentimentality. That said I must also admit that I enjoyed this film immensely although I am not certain I would have if anyone but Ian McKellen had played the role of Holmes.

McKellen is a wonderful actor for many reasons, not the least of which is the sense of gravitas that he can bring to a role. In this film, he does bring that sense of gravitas.
