The initiative saw around rubbish collection vehicles and other equipment operated by TIKA clean the city's roads, with the Benadir municipality taking over operation of the cleaning project in March In —, Mogadishu's municipal authority in conjunction with the British and Norwegian governments began a project to install solar-powered street lights on all of the capital's major roads.
The solar panels have helped to improve night-time visibility and enhance the city's overall aesthetic appeal. Minibuses are the most common type of public transportation in Mogadishu.
The next most frequently used public vehicles in the city are auto rickshaws bajaj. They number around 3, units and come in various designs.
The auto-rickshaws represent a lower cost alternative to taxis and minibuses, typically charging half the price for the same distance, with flexible rates.
Due to their affordability, capacity to negotiate narrow lanes and low fuel consumption, the three-wheeled vehicles are often appealing investment opportunities for small-scale entrepreneurs.

With the outbreak of the civil war in the early s, Mogadishu International Airport's flight services experienced routine disruptions and its grounds and equipment were largely destroyed.

Unter ihrer Herrschaft gab es in der Stadt keine Waffengewalt mehr, im übrigen Land kam es jedoch weiterhin zu Kämpfen. Im Dezember gelang es der Übergangsregierung mit massiver militärischer Unterstützung Äthiopiens , Mogadischu einzunehmen und die Union islamischer Gerichte zu verdrängen.
Die Übergangsregierung versuchte erstmals, sich in Mogadischu und im restlichen Land zu etablieren. Unter letzteren sind militante Islamisten und Angehörige des Hawiye -Clans — von denen manche den sofortigen Abzug Äthiopiens verlangten, während andere weitergehende politische Ziele verfolgen — sowie Akteure, die allgemein an einer stabilen Regierung kein Interesse haben.
Ein Bericht von Human Rights Watch kommt zum Schluss, dass dabei die äthiopischen und Übergangsregierungs-Truppen wie auch die Aufständischen durch Vorgehen ohne Rücksicht auf die Zivilbevölkerung Kriegsverbrechen begangen haben.
Bei einem Anschlag in Mogadischu am Oktober tötete ein Selbstmordattentäter in einem mit Sprengstoff beladenen Lastwagen Menschen. Oktober Juli wurde der Bürgermeister der Stadt, Abdirahman Omar Osman, bei einem Attentat der Al-Shabaab so schwer verletzt, dass er kurz darauf starb; weitere sechs Menschen wurden bei dem Anschlag getötet.
