Yet focusing on this thirst for revenge, the story allows for lead character Ami Minase Yashiro to get into all sorts of bloody fights, all of which are over the top and extremely ridiculous.
She is exceptionally, good! No, instead The Machine Girl tells a story simply for the sake of delivering these moments of extreme violence and camp action, and yet ironically enough it is only through such instances that the movie achieves any real degree of engagement.
So while there is definite entertainment value to be had here, it is all too padded and stuffed with superfluous and perfunctory drama that lacks absolutely anything interesting; at one point The Machine Girl can be serious fun, then for the next twenty minutes your likely going to crying your eyes out with boredom.
So the question is, how much will you tolerate in order to see graphic, exploitative violence? Unfortunately, only those with the grandest of attention spans and patience will be able to thrift through what is on display here as no matter how indulgently humorous all the gore may be, there simply isn't enough material outside of this to warrant a full, uninterrupted viewing.
I suppose it doesn't help either that for most UK audiences, the movie has been dubbed just to spite us even more, like the original performers didn't do a bad enough job.
For what it's worth, there are a few incidentally comical performances here, but much of what makes them so ludicrous to watch is through the emphasised dialogue that is apparent not only through the small ensemble of unknown actors, but through the script itself.
No, I'm afraid the somewhat overused concept of "so bad, it's good" doesn't come into play here; no matter how much Minase Yashiro tries to make us believe.
Instead The Machine Girl, with its plodding structure, unintelligible plot and mundane characters, fails to overcome its lack of substance by spending far too much time away from why anyone is actually watching.
At times it reminded me of The Evil Dead in terms of its graphic but obviously stylized display of violence, but even that had atmosphere and an undeniably compelling pace to its narrative; Machine Girl is just a routinely boring, empty and dumb gore movie.
