Verified Purchase. Okay, so I don't typically write movie reviews, because we all know I showed up for the big name here: Chris Evans. And if you didn't, well, now you do.
That being said, I don't think this movie is what I expected. Nor do I like it just for him. I knew it was a romance.
I saw the trailer yesterday, and wanted to see this more than ever before. I expected a typical romance--the guy and girl meet, they go through stuff to help each other, they fall in love forever.
And those traits can apply to this movie, but in that same breath, it was so different from typical format.
The ending threw me, the events weren't everyday. Everything about it was familiar, yet unexpected. Nick is pining for this woman he's loved for a long time.
Brooke is married and having issues of her own. They meet as Nick is trumpeting in Grand Central and Brooke is running to chase down a train and drops her phone as she passes him, effectively breaking it and missing her train.
And so begins a journey through a night in NYC where old loves are confronted, issues arise, a lifetime opportunity is revealed That's where this is so different.
You get to know the characters through their own stories as well as their story together. It's not rushed or forced between them.
It's almost infuriating that it seems to be moving so slow at times, but I think that's what makes it more a true-to-life experience. So refreshing.
Evans as Nick was almost heartbreaking at some parts, because I swear he seriously looks on the verge of tears himself--the sad eyes he naturally has, I'm sure, help with that.
Alice Eve's Brooke was played well. She made her character strong when she needed Brooke to be, weak when Brooke had to be. Both were fantastic together as though maybe Nick and Brooke could be a couple, but maybe it could never work between them.
This is also Chris Evans' directorial debut. He brought a feel to the movie that I hadn't experienced before The camera work was brilliant, keeping the focus on Nick and Brooke, quite literally.
On long shots, the world around them was not perfectly clear, but they were. It felt like a very intimate setting where it's just you watching or spying on these two characters.
It was really a great way to make it seem more personal. The score works well with the story, the soundtrack as well.
The way the music was pieced into the movie reminds me of Bright Lights, Big City Recent updated music, mixed with the old, mixed with something jazzy.
It blended with the story very well. All in all, I am very surprised that I loved this more than I thought I would. I mean, with the exception of Johnny Storm because he was so pompous and arrogant Chris Evans did that one a little too well , I admit to liking the majority of Chris Evans' projects.
Fangirl, what can I say? But even if I had neutral feelings about him, I would love this movie all the same. The story and the characters alone should win it, and I think here, they did.
I recommend at least one watch. I also recommend keeping a box of tissues handy for when you watch, because it did make me cry.
You have been warned. Truthfully, this film isn't about romance. I know it's labeled that but, honestly if you are looking for that you will be disappointed.
However; that being said, this film is good at what it should have been labeled under, and that is drama and personal growth.
This film is about finding your way out of a dark place in your life. Two people who both are praying for a sign for help meet in the subway in NYC.
There they take a spiritual journey towards understanding not only themselves but, that life is about choices and always moving forwards.
The ending of the movie if your expecting a romance is shorter on joyous but, if you look at through the lens of anything is possible because they are no longer frozen in time than it is simply beautiful.
I highly recommend this film to anyone with an open mind and the need to move forwards in their own lives. I knew Evans could get immersed in an erstwhile script, but I had no idea Alice Eve was all that talented, but she is.
I believe that like a lot of others, Eve was sic. Just another pretty face she is, but she's indeed a very solid actress to boot.
Looking forward to seeing both of these fine actors in the days ahead A sweet movie that nevertheless didn't have a completely saccharine ending.

There were some really great lines, made even stronger by Chris Evans' and Alice Eve's performances. Parts that could have easily come off as cheesy or overwrought were pulled off nicely.
Five stars for a great first directing job for Chris Evans. Four stars for the film, story, and acting: Chris and Alice Eve were great together in a story that felt both plausible and real.
Having lived in or outside of six of the largest cities in the USA during my life, I found it all quite true to things my friends and I have seen or done, so the story was quite solid in my experience.
The scene in which Eve's character turns into a toxic witch for a few moments because she is not going to escape a painful scene at home was especially real.
I had a long-term friend who would repeatedly try to avoid situations she created by passive-aggressive action, such as reading her partner's private email, then blindsiding him with a caustic letter.
Men like Chris' character are also out and about in the world; they are good guys who may be afraid to try again because their fear of a second failure is enormous and pining over the first one is safer, more comfortable.
While they might never be as gorgeous as Captain America, they can be very well worth knowing.

I loved this movie that after I rented it on amazon I had to run out and buy it. I'm not a chick-flick kind of girl, though I do have one or two that I absolutely love.
I definitely wouldn't qualify this as a chick-flick either, though I think it can appeal to fans of that type of genre as well. While I like Chris Evans ok, it was the plot that pulled me into this movie.
It is unique and quirky and I really love both the characters by the end. The way the story reveals key issues is phenomenally done.
I had my sister watch it with me on a girl's night out my 4th time watching this movie, guys, because it's that good.
