The modern axe accepts upgrades to either be really fast which can be good with its knockdown capabilities and cutting trees, really strong and just dish out a lot of damage, or have balanced out damage and speed.

The katana just feels too weak to me, it has great range and speed for keeping cannibals away but the damage sucks. However, a katana is pretty damn good when you have maxed out strength but that will take a while.

Keeps them at arms length and in caves their erratic movements tend to make fighting 1v1 not too hard. But when that doesn't work I do bust out the katana for raw speed.
